How to care for your flowers

Lucky you! You’ve just received a beautiful bouquet of flowers. We’ve got some top tips to help you keep your blooms looking beautiful for longer.

On arrival

When your bouquet arrives, you might notice that some of the flowers are still in bud. This is because we’ve chosen to send you the freshest flowers. But don’t worry, they’ll open up in just a few days.

If your bouquet includes roses, you might find that some of them have slight discolouration to the outer petals. These are called guard petals and we leave them on to protect the inner petals during delivery. You can easily remove the guard petals by giving them a very gentle tug.

You’ll notice that your flowers have been delivered in a bubble of water. This water bubble has been pre-filled with flower food so you don’t need to do anything with your blooms for the first couple of days. Sit back and enjoy!

A few days later…

After two to three days your flowers will be thirsty and require a top of fresh water and flower food. When choosing a vase, it’s important to choose something that’s got a good width and a medium sized height (not just because it’s the prettiest). Be sure to make sure your vase is squeaky clean to eliminate any bacteria that might harm your flowers.

Add the contents of the flower food sachet that arrived with the bouquet to your vase. Pour a litre of water into the vase and then give it a stir. It’s really important to follow the instructions on the back of the flower food as not enough water can make the solution too strong and having too much water can make the solution too weak.

Trimming stems

Head to the sink and unwrap your bouquet carefully. Using a pair of sharp scissors or secateurs, cut a couple of centimetres off the edge of each stem at an angle. This allows for a greater surface area to absorb more water and more nutrients – keeping your blooms fresh for longer!

Florist tip! We recommend you keep the string that’s wrapped around the stems in your bouquet attached as will help to keep the flowers keep their shape.

Before placing your bouquet in the vase, check that there’s no remaining leaves on the stems that will sit below the water. By removing the leaves, this prevents the chance of any extra bacteria getting into the water which could shorten the lifespan of your bouquet.

Finding the perfect place for your flowers

Keep them away from direct sunlight, draughty or hot spots that will cause your flowers to wilt or fade. No radiators or windowsills! Remember to keep your blooms away from little people and pets who might be tempted to munch the flowers – some can be harmful if they’re consumed. Lilies especially are toxic to cats. We recommend you place them on a protected surface but most of all, place them where everyone can enjoy them.
